Azmi Shahrin was
born in Ipoh and received his early education at St. Michael's Institution,
Ipoh and Malay College Kuala Kangsar. He won a Shell Scholarship to further his
studies at the University of Kent, United Kingdom where he obtained a
Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Economics. He subsequently obtained a
Master's degree in Economics from the University of Malaya. He has been a
member of MENSA since 1989. Azmi has more than a decade's experience marketing
industrial fuels and lubricants and managing distribution channels for Shell
Malaysia Trading Sdn. Bhd., managing the Hotlink brand for Maxis Communications
Bhd., managing marketing communications in a software development company as
well as managing his personal business ventures. However, destiny was calling
and in 2003 Azmi quit his well paid job to become a trainer.
Azmi owes the turning point of his life to Toastmasters. In 1998, he
joined Extol Toastmasters Club to sharpen his public speaking and communication
skills. He was President of the club in 2005-2006. He was also instrumental in
the founding of Kelab Pidato
Perdana (a Malay language public speaking club) where he served
as President in 2004-2005. In 2007-2008, Azmi was Governor of Division W (of
District 51 of Toastmasters International) and had the responsibility to
oversee 32 clubs. He has also won many prizes in speech contests over the years
and awards for excellent leadership and dedicated service, such as the Division
C Toastmaster of the Year 2004-2005 award. He is also a trainer with the
Toastmasters Leadership Institute. In 2006, Azmi achieved Toastmasters' highest
award, which carries the title of "Distinguished Toastmaster" (DTM).
All these enabled Azmi to launch and excel at his new career as a public
speaker and public speaking trainer.
In the 7 years as a full-time trainer, Azmi
has trained over 6,500 adults and students to develop public speaking,
communication and leadership skills. Besides conducting training for
Toastmasters and programmes for the public, he has trained for Petronas,
Tourism Malaysia , Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education,
Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Defence, Institut Tadbiran Awam Negara
(INTAN), University of Malaya, University Teknologi Malaysia, University Putra
Malaysia, International Medical University, Hospital Selayang, Bank Rakyat,
CIMB, DRB-HICOM, IRDA, MIROS, MYIPO, Panasonic, RapidKL, SYABAS, SIRIM, TNB,
UMW and others. Azmi is currently the Principal Trainer of ProSkills Trainers. He also
consults for several other training providers. Azmi is a Certified Trainer with
Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB).
Azmi's ambition is to make good English and
effective communication a reality for Malaysians. He is inspired and encouraged
by the positive feedback of his participants and happy that he is finally
touching real lives.
In 2008, Azmi obtained a Master's Degree in
Economics from the University of Malaya. He is also a member of MENSA.
